Welcome

My name is Zahra Hamid Sultan. I am a social worker from Baghdad, Iraq. I left Iraq in 2001 and have lived in Jordan as a refugee with my two daughters since then.

I became involved with NGO's and Human Rights organizations in 2002. I started working with Palestinian refugees in Jordan, because there were not many Iraqi refugees that time and it wasn't as a big problem as now also as Iraqi person I couldn't get a work permission so I worked as a volunteer with many international and national organizations in 2003 when the war started in Iraq I became involved with Iraqi refugees issue and worked as independent social worker and translator for many US organizations who come to Jordan to discover the situation of Iraqis and provide services for them . Sometimes I worked as English teacher and gave English courses to refugees who were accepted for the resettlement programs through the UNHCR , I worked really hard to serve many refugees from different countries like Iraq , Palestine , Sudan , Russia

Also, I have worked with international media and journalists who were concerned about the situation of the displaced Iraqis. We made many reports about the lack of education for Iraqi children in Jordan and the neighboring hood countries , lack of medical care for people who injured in the war, the hard living conditions for Iraqis and the bad treatment for some Iraqis and the US war and invasion of Iraq. I participated in many national and international conferences to represent Iraqis. I attended numerous training courses from international organizations that included how to work with NGO's, do proposal writing, network with donors, and build relationships across cultures.

Recently, I was sponsored by SIT (School for International Training) to come to the U.S. to train in Conflict Transformation Across Cultures. Currently I am working to raise awareness about the situation of Iraqis in Jordan and the neighboring hood countries and have started some small projects. These projects include bringing Iraqi children to the U.S. who have been injured in the war for medical treatment, collect donations to send to families living in poverty in Jordan, and to help children receive resources for education either in Jordan or in the U.S.
